Please Re-Title "Janis Joplin Handwritten Letter Number 2"
When the future superstar rock and blues singer wrote this letter to her lover, Peter de Blanc, on September 15, 1965, Joplin was back in her hometown of Port Arthur, Texas, trying to kick an amphetamine and alcohol habit that had escalated since her move to San Francisco in 1963. On the envelope, she has written "Miss Janis Joplin," her address, and de Blanc's temporary hospital address in New York City, where he was recovering from an illness. The six-page letter reads in small part: "...I kept thinking about you. I got kind of warm & blushy thinking about how much I love you & everything...Sigh. Kiss, kiss. I love you!!!...I registered for school this morning. At last!...after fixing my hair 3 different times, I went to Beaumont & registered...I got all the classes that I wanted...I am not the lecherable thrill-crazy young thing that I was before. Yuck!...on Wednesday evenings from 6-8, I'm taking Poise & Personality Development. There, shudder, I've said it...I want to be able to go someplace nice without going Wow, twitch, what's that!, oh excuse me, twitch, bumble, etc....I'm taking it so I will be good enough for you...Kiss, kiss, J." Several months after writing this letter, her relationship with de Blanc at an end, she returned to San Francisco to become lead singer of Big Brother & The Holding Company. Within a year, Joplin was on her way to stardom. While recording what would become her final album, "Pearl," with the Full-Tilt Boogie Band, she succumbed to a heroin overdose on October 4, 1970. The six-page letter, executed in black ink, exhibits one horizontal mailing fold; otherwise the envelope and letter are in near fine condition.
