Description:

PLATTERHOF SERVING PLATES AND PLATE COVERS
Fine grouping of 13 pieces of heavy silver-plate tableware from the notorious Platterhof hotel at Obersalzberg, the retreat used by those who would visit Adolf Hitler at the Berghof. Each piece bears the emblem of the hotel, a standing figure of a maiden in a meadow between two mountains, holding an edelweiss in her hands. Included are six 5" diameter soup bowls, each having handles on either side and a cover with a round knob; one extra soup bowl cover, a delicate 4" wide ice cream bowl, and five 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" plate covers with lifting handles. Each piece is also marked with the stamp of maker Gebruder Hepp and "90" silver plate stamp. Overall very good condition. The Platterhof hotel began as an Obersalzberg estate called the "Steinhauslehen". Mauritia "Moritz" Mayer bought it in 1877 and later opened the Pension Moritz. After her death, the pension became known as the "Platterhof," because Moritz was widely assumed to have inspired the character of "Judith Platter" in Richard Voss' novel "Zwei Menschen" ("Two People"). After the Nazis took over the Obersalzberg, the original Platterhof was remodeled, and a large multi-wing hotel was erected around the original building. It served high-ranking Nazi dignitaries and other important visitors. In 1943, necessities of war turned the Platterhof into a military hospital and rest home. The bombing attack of April 25, 1945 did considerable damage to the Platterhof. It was not destroyed, but it stood derelict for several years and was demolished in 2000.
