Description:

Fine lot of five "whiteprint" facsimile plans drafted by the U.S. Army's Institute of Heraldry in Alexandria and printed by the Government Printing Office, depicting flags and related accoutrements used by the U.S. Government and Military. Includes: plan for the fifty-star U.S. national flag, 33 1/2" x 25 1/2", dated April 25, 1967; 33 1/2" x 25 1/2" plan for the flag of the U.S. Army, dated June 5, 1956, one week before the official adoption of this flag by President Dwight D. Eisenhower's executive order; 33 1/2" x 25 1/2" plan for the flag of the U.S. Air Force, dated Sep. 23, 1962; 33 1/2" x 25 1/2" plan for the cotton duck-cloth case for the flag of the U.S. military flags described above; and a 17 1/4" x 11" plan for three flagstaffs to be used with the U.S. Army flag described above. All show small folds and minor bumps to the edges, else very good. Five pieces. The plans originate from the estate of Cmdr. Ronald L. Jackson (1928-1990). Jackson, a Navy officer, was tasked with supervising the planning and implementation of reciprocal state dinners, the operation of the White House Mess and food service at Camp David and aboard Air Force One, and travelled everywhere with Presidents Johnson through George H. Bush. Jackson was named to his position through a naval appointment, which was intended to expire after a two-year tour. However, by the end of this period, President Lyndon Johnson, a fellow former navy officer, was so pleased with Jackson's performance that he personally ordered that the job classification be changed from a military to a civilian position, so that Jackson could continue to serve the president indefinitely.
