Pius XI 1857-1939 Ambrogio Damiani Achille Rati, Pope 1922-1939), signed the Laternan Treaty with Mussolini in 1929 establishing Vatican City, later denounced anti-Semitism, Communis in and Nazism in encyclicals. Huge, most impressive S.P., 19in x 25in silver print of the seated Pope in robes etc., by G. Felici, Rome. In the 19in x 11in white bottom border area are nine neatly calligrified lines, an "Apostolicam Benedictionem" to Rev. Benedictus Przemielewski of Baltimore, October 4, 1927 Surrounding the calligraphy are hand-colored leaves, flowers, and religious symbols, making the piece look much like an illuminated manuscript. Boldly signed as Pope "Pius Pp. XI" to the right of his personal, blind- embossed seM. Matted and in an early wooden frame.
