Description:

"PIRATE" PIECE OF EIGHT FROM PORT ROYAL, JAMAICA
A Mexican silver eight reale "piece of eight" recovered from the destroyed pirate and privateer city of Port Royal, Jamaica. The city became a haven for such outlaws when the British invited them to use the port as a home base in an effort to deter any Spanish attempts at recapture. Just before noon on June 7, 1692 the city was shaken to pieces by a terrific earthquake followed by three tidal waves. As buildings sank into the sea, 3,000 perished. This reale was recovered by underwater archaeologist Sir Robert Marx during his three year excavation at the site and is accompanied by his signed Certificate of Authenticity.
