Description:

PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD
(1818-1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter that started the Civil War. He also led with distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Pencil A.D.S. with initials ‘P.G.T.' written on the recto and verso of the text of a telegram sent to him by SAMUEL COOPER (1798-1876), Confederate major general and the highest ranking officer in the Confederate Army, 2pp. 8vo., Richmond, June 12, 1862. Cooper writes: Gen'l Kirby Smith is pressed by superior force of the enemy and is actively operating against them. Can you…return to him the troops withdrew from his command…with all possible dispatch…' At the bottom of the telegram and continuing on the next page, Beauregard's responds: ‘It would be fatal to detach any troops from this Army at the moment when I expect daily to meet much superior force. P.G.T.' An old tape repair slightly affects text, else very good. Beauregard was facing an enormous Union army following his retreat from Corinth, while Smith was engaged in invading Kentucky.
