Description:

PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD
(1818-1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Beauregard also led with great distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. Fine content A.L.S. on his ornate railroad letterhead, 2pp. 8vo., New Orleans, Oct. 29, 1969 to henry G. Humphries, a cotton factor and merchant in Mobile. In part: '...I shall write again as soon as I get Dr. Holt's answer. As to Judge H. I don't think it is [?] to write to him until after I shall have seen Col. Smith. The principal point is attained, that the Col. heard Mr. [Jefferson] Davis say, that he was opposed to the advance of our forces on Washington after the Battle of Manassas. His reasons for being so opposed are secondary ,although of course I should like to have them also for future use if required...' Very good. Beauregard commanded the Confederate forces at First Manassas (First Bull Run) on July 21, 1861 and routed the Union forces under Gen. Irvin McDowell - only 25 miles from Washington. As the battle ended, the Confederates were bolstered by the arrival from Richmond of President Jefferson Davis, but the victorious forces were too disorganized to pursue the Federals. Here, four years after war's end, Beauregard seemingly seeks another explanation for the Confederates failing to attack the city.
