Description:

(1836-1896) Major General in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War and a post-war politician, diplomat, and four-term United States Congressman from Georgia. Young participated in the Battle of Brandy Run, as well as the Bristoe, Mine Run, Overland and Gettysburg campaigns. Good content A.L.S. "P.M.B. Young", 4pp. 4to., Richmond, Sep. 8, 1861, to his father, Revolutionary War officer Capt. William Young. Young informs his father of some advances in his military career, in part: "...One week ago I received a letter from Col. Benning notifying me that I had been elected Lt Col of his regiment at Lynchburg Va. I was preparing to go & Col. [Thomas Reade Rootes] Cobb came to the conclusion that he could not give me up & he went to the President & asked permission to keep me. So the Pres. has appointed me a major in the Provisional army & made me chief of cavalry in Cobb's legion. I thought this for many reasons was the preferable position although a grade lower than the other one. Do you not think so? I feel myself under such obligations to Benning that I will yet accept his offer if he insists upon it. But on account of Cobb's weight & influence & the reputation which the legion is getting I concluded that it was the best for me. He has unbounded confidence in me & frankly acknowledges that the good discipline & efficiency in the drill of the legion is chiefly owing to myself. My cavalry consists of four hundred of the best men & best horses in Georgia. It was of course a compliment to me for these old gentlemen (Yancy, Stovall, Lanton & Delaney) to request that I should be appointed to command them through this war & also form the Pres. who remarked to Mr. Cobb that age in this case was not an objection to him..." Young continues, requesting items from home and relating family news, and signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Major Cobb's Legion". Shows original mailing folds with small splits thereto at the right edge, else very good. Cobb's Legion consisted of a single integrated command, with individual components from the infantry, cavalry, and artillery, although in practice, these individual elements were assigned to other organizations. Young remained a commander of cavalry elements within the Legion throughout the war.
