Description:

PHRENOLOGISTS STUDY U. S. GRANT
Heavily illustrated publication, "American Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated. A Repository of Science, Literature, General Intelligence", Vol. 38, No., 3, published by Fowler and Wells, New York, Sep. 1863, 23pp. large 4to.. Phrenology is the study of facial features and characteristics to determine personality and character. In this issue of the front page article outlines the phrenological characteristics of Grant and attributes his success to superior ancestral heritage. The article reads, in small part: "…the bony structure…is wanting in nothing. His constitution is excellent, his power of endurance great…his heart, lungs, stomach, liver and other vital organs are well developed and in good condition…these, with other indications, evince to us that he is descended from a hardy and a long-lived stock…providing he lives temperately and meets no accident, is good for many years…General Grant is…a man of plain appearance, about five feet nine inches in height, light hair, blue eyes…methodical and cautious…". Much more interesting content on Grant including his biography up to that point which obviously does not included Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain or his ascendance to the presidency . Other articles include physiognomy of cheeks; family likeness; American aborigines, and choosing a wife. Great quackery. Reinforced at the spine
