PHOTOGRAPHS OF CONCENTRATION CAMPS AND GERMAN SURRENDER
A very fine collection of eleven mostly 4" x 5" b/w Signal Corps photographs chronicling the liberation of various concentration and prisoner of war camps in Germany and Czechoslovakia. Includes a fascinating image of a family, standing behind barbed wire with the explanatory text on verso: "SLAVE LABORER AND HIS FAMILY, ALTHOUGH FREED BY THE 1ST U.S. ARMY, ARE CONTENT TO LIVE IN THE STOCKADE WHERE THEY HAVE LIVED FOR THE PAST SIX YEARS UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THEY CAN GO BACK, TO THEIR HOMELAND...". Other images include German prisoners of war, an image of Hitler's birthplace with a one-legged man walking on crutches in front, images of soldiers standing outside a house where General Wendt Weitersheim was surrendering the 11th Panzer Division near Veeruby, Czechoslovakia on May 4, 1945. All photos back stamped with explanatory text from the Army Signal Corps and date stamps of "15 AUG 1945" and "CONFIDENTIAL". Overall fine condition.
