Description:

PHOTO AND DOCUMENT GROUPING OF A BLACK MEDICAL OFFICER
An important, expansive grouping of documents, photographs, clippings and relics related to the military career of Capt. CLARK M. VALENTINE (1904-?) of Battle Creek, Michigan, a career American military officer who served as a medical officer in Italy and elsewhere during World War II. Valentine, an athlete and post-grad student who also served with the C.C.C. for eight years, was commissioned a second lieutenant and was mustered in on Sep. 16, 1942. His first posting appears to have been with the 317th Medical Battalion of the 92nd Infantry 'Buffalo Soldiers', a 'colored' regiment which would be heavily engaged in Italy. Valentine's wife kept a scrapbook, (included) which contains in small part: Valentine's 'Buffalo' shoulder patch; a 92nd Infantry Activation Ceremony program with a small flag presumably from the activation; 92nd officer's training certificate signed by Gen. EDWARD A. ALMOND; Medical Field Service School diploma; 13 photographs of Valentine while overseas, as well as a large photo of the 92nd headquarters staff; as well as typed and printed orders, 'The Buffalo' regimental newspaper, Italian occupation currency, programs, clippings, etc. Loose pages from another album contain about 85 additional photographs from wartime Italy, about half being later reprints. These largely show groups of men and officers including Valentine, etc. Three file holders bear 56 photographs taken from German prisoners, including Kriegsmarine sailors, alpine troops, Gen. Heinz Guderian, three photos of crowds attacking Italian fascists, ski companies, awards ceremonies, etc. Yet another group of 27 postwar photos includes reprints of horrific images from concentration camps, the Eagles Nest, and Berchtesgaden. A final album has about 50 photographs of Valentine at work with the CCC, his family members, etc. Insignia is also present, notably Valentine's Red Cross armband, cloth shoulder straps, Europe service ribbon with star, and medical, infantry, and Transportation Corps collar insignia. Finally, there is a matched pair of Italian officers' gold shoulder boards taken as a prize. With Valentine's Report of Transfer or Discharge. Valentine remained in the Army until 1953 and stayed a reservist afterwards.
