Description:

PHILLIP D. RODDEY
(1826-1897) Confederate brigadier general of cavalry who served under Braxton Bragg, Nathan Bedford Forrest, and Joseph Wheeler. War-date signed endorsement ‘P. D. Roddey' in black ink on the second leaf of an A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., ‘Hd Qrs Ferrell's Battery', Nov. 2, 1864, from Georgia 14th Light Artillery Battalion captain C. B. Ferrell to Roddey, requesting the return of a portion of his command who had been detached and placed under Roddey's command, but who had been left behind in Georgia with forces under Wheeler's command when Roddy's forces were ordered to northern Alabama. Roddey's endorsement, penned Nov. 4, 1864, forwards the request to John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee Headquarters, and requests that the detachment be returned to Roddey's command, while a second endorsement below, written by Hood's adjutant, refers the matter to Wheeler and directs him to comply with Roddey's request. Shows original mailing folds, with some toning and ink burn from another document, in very good condition overall.
