Description:

(1815 - 1862) Union major general who served in Napoleon III's guard, lost an arm during the Mexican War, and led with distinction in the Peninsula campaign. He was killed at Chantilly. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 29, 1852 to Alfred Street. Kearny pens a letter of recommendation for his friend, Cyrus Page, who is apparently in a difficult position. In part: "...[I] hope that for my sake you will aid him in a position to the Governor...Mr. Page has been unfortunate rather than justly blamable and was made the victim of a conspiracy. He was bankrupt, found guilty under the act, & was, sad to say, sentenced...he has taken up the occupation of daguerreotyping...[he is] anxious to be reinstated in his full political rights of Citizenship. This is the substance of his petition..." Folds, else fine condition. After the failure of his marriage the previous year and frustrated with the slow promotion process of the Army, Kearny had resigned his commission a year earlier.
