Description:

PHILIP III OF SPAIN ORDERS LANDS RETURNED TO NOBLEMEN
Important manuscript document, 62pp. 4to. parchment in a scribal, decorative hand, [Madrid?], ca. 1617. A lengthy, detailed grant of restitution in the name of the king ordering that properties be restored to a number of 'hidalgos', or landowners who had over a decade earlier been deprived of their lands, that they be returned their titles and that they be freed of the obligation of paying tax on their lands. Philip decrees that the successful appeal, lodged by the descendants of the hidalgos, be recorded and bound in silk. This appears to be the decision so ordered, which names Philip, records the decision, and names the noblemen involved as well. The red silk covers are heavily worn and stained, and the royal pendant seal is gone, but contents are in fine condition. According to several ca. 1880s notes in English included with the document, the landowners had originally been brought before the Royal Council accused of having failed in their duties as revenue collectors. They were deprived of some of their properties, dispossessed of their titles, and enrolled on the lists of taxpayers. In the following years, suit was brought against the descendants of the members of the Council, and in 1604 a petition by the families to restore their lands and titles to them. Their petition was refused, but a new petition was forwarded to the Royal Council by the Court of Supplication in 1605 and repeatedly thereafter until 1617 when the council finally agrees to undo their decision of years past. Philip's reign was marked by a dearth of income to support his bloated court and administration. A great historical document.
