PHILIP H. SHERIDAN
(1831 - 1888) Union major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter. Sheridan's fighting prowess was evident throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern. Fine association A.D.S., 1p., 3 1/2" x 7 3/4", "Head Qrs. Middle Military Division", Oct. 10, 1864. In full: "I think so much of Captain Reno that I have heretofore recommended him to the War Dept. for appointment of Brig. Genl. Your Excellency will make no mistake in making this appointment. P. H. Sheridan Maj. Genl". Fine. In fact, nine days later, the Gov. of Pennsylvania would approve Reno's promotion to colonel of the 12th Pa. Cavalry Volunteers and brevet him lieutenant-colonel for his conduct at Cedar Creek.
