Description:

PHILIP H. SHERIDAN (1831 - 1888) Union major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter. Sheridan's fighting prowess was evident throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern. Fine content and association A.L.S, 2pp. 8vo., Chicago, June 11, 1881 to his fellow ex-general, WILLIAM T. SHERMAN (1820-1891). Two years later, Sheridan would succeed Sherman as Commanding General of the U.S. Army, and would hold that position until his death. Sheridan transmits a report on the ongoing forced removal of Native Americans from their lands to reservations. In part: "...Military affairs are running smooth in this division. The Indians at Buford came down to Standing Rock [Reservation] without any trouble and I presume those at [Fort] Keough will follow suit. They have made some protests, but when the time comes will go quietly. There has been considerable murmuring among the Utes but the presence of a good sized force at the uncomply'g[?] camp diminished their resistance to the Commissioners & their plans. The latter body is now on the move for the selection of a new agency or Reservation. New Mexico is [?], so also is the Depot of the Platte. The extension of the North Pacific railroad to Glendin Creek will probably make considerable changes in the lines of transportation in the upper country & I am going out to the end of the road. This crossing [?] with General [Alfred] Terry to see what is best to be done..." Some uneven toning to first page and signature, else very good. Of course, Sheridan and Sherman were intricately associated in the Indian Wars, and ruthlessly suppressed all uprisings.
