Description:

PHILIP H. SHERIDAN
(1831 - 1888) Union major general of cavalry and famous Indian fighter. Sheridan's fighting prowess was evident throughout the war, from Booneville to Chickamauga and the elimination of J.E.B. Stuart at Yellow Tavern. War date A.L.S. "P.H. Sheridan MgGenl" 1p. 8vo., Loudon, [Tenn.], Feb. 14, [18]64 to Capt. Dickerson of the Chief Quartermaster at Knoxville. In full: "Trains are now coming in with forage & supply to transport across the River here with our present means is a big Contract. Have you ordered a steamer for ferrying purposes[?]. It will require additional trains from Knoxville here." . Two months later, Sheridan would be summoned to Grant's headquarters and given the command of the corps of cavalry in the Army of the Potomac. Contemporary ink smudges detract little, toning from paperclip, else very good condition. Matted and framed with an engraving of Sheridan.
