PETITION FOR THE PARTITION OF A SOUTH CAROLINA ESTATE, INCLUDING FOUR NAMED SLAVES
Manuscript D.S., 1p., South Carolina, Feb. 20, 1809, a petition drafted by the law partnership of John Geddes and Edward Peter Croft on behalf of Joseph Seibert and his wife Mary, requesting the partition of an estate in Charleston, including a parcel of land which they claim they had been leased before the death of the owner. They also lay claim to four slaves owned by the estate, named in the petition as Tom, Abram, Patty and Doll. The petition is signed "Geddes & Croft" at the conclusion, and is docketed on the verso. Shows folds with extensive splitting, with some cello tapes repairs thereto on the verso, with additional small chips and light foxing, else very good. In addition to his law practice, JOHN GEDDES (177-1828) would serve as the forty-seventh governor of South Carolina.
