Description:

PETITION BROADSIDE SEEKS TO BAN NEW YORK STEAMSHIPS FROM NEW JERSEY'S WATERS
Fine content printed broadside, 1p. 8 1/4" x 12 3/4", [New Jersey], Jan. 26, 1820, a petition addressed to the "Legislature of the State of New Jersey". The petitioners claim, in part, that they: "...feel themselves injured and insulted by the tributary system practised upon them by the citizens of the State of New York, relating to Steam-Boat navigation; inasmuch as they are denied in the waters of New York, those advantages and privileges which the citizens of New-York are permitted to enjoy [in New Jersey waters]...[we are] paying exorbitant demands, and submitting to every species of contumely and vassalage...in violation of those rights of free and unrestrained intercourse between the several states..." The petitioners further ask that laws be enacted affecting vessels "running under any license of the Steam Boat monopoly of that State, and propelled by steam or fire...[be prohibited] from navigating the waters within...this State, or from touching or stopping at any point..." until New York's laws are properly amended. Some marginal loss at lower-left, light folds, else fine. The cross-Hudson ferry trade was a lucrative one, and by June the New Jersey legislature passed such a retaliatory law.
