Description:

(PERU CELEBRATES ITS PROCLAMATION OF INDEPENDENCE)
Rare broadside, 4pp., folio, Lima: Imprenta de los Expósitos, 1821, headed, "Gaceta Del Gobierno de Lima Independiente, Del Miercoles le de Agosto de 1821. Ano II. De La Independencia del Peru... Proclamacion y Juramento de la Independencia...". A detailed description of the celebrations in the Plaza Mayor of Lima with the proclamation of the Independence of Peru, noting the attendance of the "civil and religious bodies, as well as military battalions from Peru, Buenos Aires and Chile." Peru achieved independence from Spain in 1821 largely because of the efforts of outsiders, notably José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar. After he had ended Spanish rule in Chile in 1818, San Martín captured the Peruvian port of Pisco in 1820. Shortly thereafter, the viceroy evacuated Lima, and on July 28, 1821, San Martín proclaimed Peru's independence. Moderately toned, with moderately soiled margins and evidence of archival adhesive on the center of the left margin.
