Description:

PERIOD OVERSIZED PHOTOGRAPHS OF AMERICANS AT WAR (18)
A set of 18 oversized original photographs, each 14 x 11 in., ca. 1918, showing American soldiers and civilians at war during World War I. Images include scenes of soldiers and sailors debarking from ships, at a military boxing match, in the field and aboard ship, a pontoon bridge, a hospital scene, etc. Their condition runs from very good to fair, some affected by largely marginal damp stains, loss along the margins, or bits of other photos attached at the margins which could be easily soaked off. Photos of this size from this era are rarely seen. These photos are credited to Underwood & Underwood, a producer and distributor of stereoscopic and other photographic images, and later a pioneer in the field of news bureau photography. The images offered here were produced for the Committee On Public Information. The Committee on Public Information (1917–1919) was an independent agency under the Wilson administration created to influence public opinion to support the US in World War I, in particular, the U.S. home front. It used every medium available to create enthusiasm for the war effort and to enlist public support against the foreign and perceived domestic attempts to stop America's participation in the war. It is a notable example of propaganda in the United States.
