HUGH PERCY, 2ND DUKE OF NORTHUMBERLAND. (1742 - 1817) British officer, who commanded the reinforcements at Lexington and Concord, covering the retreat of Col. Francis Smith back to Boston. Very fine content Autograph Letter Signed "Northumberland ", 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Nov. 29, 1815 to noted portrait painter Thomas Phillips (1770-1845) requesting him to paint a portrait of Six Nation Chief, Teyoninhokavawen, also known as Captain Norton during the war of 1812. Percy writes in full: "The Chief who was at the had of All the Indians, during the last War with the United States of America, Teyoninhokavawen, commonly known among our troops by the name of Captain Norton, having promised to let me have his Picture, I have desired him to set to you for that purpose. Lord Percy going to Town, was desired to cal upon you to let you know it, which I pray[?] he has done. I must beg you therefore to appoint as early a day as you conveniently can do for Capt. Norton to come to you as I fear his stay in Town will be short. He resides at Heltson's Hotel, & speaks English perfectly well by his constant Intercourse with the British Troops & Colonists I have the pleasure to be hour's sincerely Northumberland" Percy also commissioned Gilbert Stuart portrait of Joseph Brandt which is part of the Duke of Northumberland's art collection currently on loan at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Captain Norton fought along Joseph Brant's son John at Niagara in 1812. Usual folds, otherwise fine condition. $300-500
