Description:

A most unusual theatrical or fraternal relic, a "slapstick" or "bang stick", 25" long with a 6" head, consisting of a wood handle painted reddish-brown, with a rounded head covered with padded black leather on one side and secured with black-painted rivets around the edge. Whereas most traditional "slapsticks" consist of two sprung slats of wood which create a loud slapping sound when struck, this example features a different operating mechanism: a cavity on the reverse of the head contains a brass plug which-when removed, reveals a chamber into which a brass percussion cap can be inserted. When the black leather head on the opposite side is struck, a plunger within the head drives a pin into the cap, detonating it and presumably creating a much louder and more effective "bang". The item shows scuffs overall and some cracking to the leather, but appears to be intact and in working order, although its functionality has not been tested by us!
