143. GALUSHA PENNYPACKER (1844 - 1916) Union brigadier general, the youngest man to be so appointed, wounded seven times and awarded a Medal of Honor for bravery at Fort Fisher. War-date A. L. S. "G. Pennypacker", 3pp. 8vo., in ink, "Hd. Qrs., 2nd Brigade, 2nd Div., 10th Corps", Petersburg, Va., Sept. 25, 1864 to his friend former Capt. Charles McIlvaine, Co. H, 97th Pennsylvania. In part: "...We have been doing duty in the trenches for the past four weeks...I was mustered as Colonel of my regiment by...the Secretary of War to rank from the 15th of last month. I have...the unsolicited honor of commanding the second brigade, of the second division. My command consists of the 47th and 148th New York and 76th and 97th Pennsylvania...I succeeded Col. Barton on the 15th...I expect him to resume his old position again...He is now at home on recruiting service...I cannot stand up with you on the 20th of October...I will be with you in thought and spirit...my wounds [received at Bermuda Hundred, Va. on May 20, 1864 are] troubling me but little...".
