Description:

Fine chromatography honor certificate, 16" x 23" (sight), commemorating the Civil War service of Samuel W. Seidel, first of the 127th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, and later of the 2nd Provisional Regiment of Pennsylvania Artillery. The certificate bears a large lithograph American eagle at top, above a dark blue shield displaying the state seal of Pennsylvania at center. The blue fields of the shield are decorated with numerous hand-painted symbols, including the cap insignia of the 127th Pennsylvania Volunteers and the 2nd Provisional Artillery, an American Flag and what appear to be several regimental emblems flaking a lithograph Grand Army of the Republic membership badge. The shield is divided by three orange bands, finely hand-lettered in gold ink relating Seidel's full record of service. This chronicle states that he mustered into the 127th Pennsylvania Volunteers on August 9, 1862, at which time the regiment was attached to the Army of the Potomac under General Ambrose Burnside. It further states that he participated in the Rappahannock Campaign, the Battle of Fredericksburg and the Battle of Marye's Heights, during which he was wounded. He was mustered out on May 29, 1863, but mustered into the 2nd Provisional Regiment of Pennsylvania Artillery on April 7, 1864. With this unit, he saw action in numerous late-war engagements, including the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, the Siege of Petersburg and the subsequent "Mine Explosion" (remembered as the Battle of the Crater), Chapin's Farm, the capture of Forts Harrison and Burnham, and finally was present at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. He was mustered out of service on January 29, 1866. Seidel's name is inscribed in gold ink on a dark blue banner beneath the shield. The certificate is mounted in a heavy wood frame and shows slight toning, else very good to fine.
