Description:

Manuscript D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Adams County, PA, July 29, 1856, a legal complaint by Mary Marsden against William Snyder for bastardy, after"...a male child was born of her body...and that William Snyder of said county did beget her with Child...", signed by a notary and sent to Constable JOHN L. BURNS (1793-1872). Burns, an ageing veteran from the War of 1812, later became well-known for fighting alongside the Union as a sharpshooter at the Battle of Gettysburg. When President Abraham Lincoln came to deliver his Gettysburg Address that fall, he personally requested to meet with Burns. Slightly ragged bottom edge, else fine.
