PENNSYLVANIA CAVALRY LIEUTENANT RECORDS A CONGRATULATORY LETTER FROM GENERAL SAMUEL CARTER
Good content A.L.S.3pp. 4to., Richmond, Kentucky, Jan. 9, 1863, from Lieutenant Isaac D. Landis of the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry to his parents. Landis opens the letter by transmitting the complete text of "General Order No. 1", issued by Union brigadier general Samuel Carter, congratulating the men of the 9th Pennsylvania and two other cavalry units for their participation in a recent raid into Tennessee. In part: "... the Genl commanding it desires to thank you in his own name and that of our common Country for the faithful manner in which you performed the difficult duties assigned you. In 20 days you marched 470 miles 170 of which were in the enemy''s country... In every instance when you met the Rebels you captured, destroyed or put them to flight. You burned two most important R.R. Bridges on the E. Tenn. & Va. R.R. at a time when ''it was taxed to its utmost capacity'' - took some 400 prisoners, killed a number, destroyed 600-700 stand of arms, a locomotive, tender and car, besides a considerable amount of valued stores..." On the third page, Landis transmits the order to his father, in small part: "Dear father, enclosed you will find the copy of an order from Brigadier General Carter to the troops that accompanied him in his Expedition to E. Tenn... He gives us a good bit of praise but not more than they deserve..." Landis signs at the conclusion to his own note. Shows original mailing folds, else very good. Landis would serve in the 9th Pennsylvania Cavalry for almost the entire war, from October 1862 until July 1865, receiving wounds in Georgia in November of 1864.
