PEDRO ALVEREZ DE TOLEDO Y LEIVA (1484-1553) Spanish general who once served as the Viceroy of Naples but was named Viceroy of Peru in 1639. Interesting manuscript D.S. as viceroy, 3pp., folio, Lima, May 17, 1646, in which Alvarez names the university-educated Presbyterian minister Barreto de Castro as head of the Royal Hospital of Santa Ana, a hospital set up in 1550 to treat indigenous peoples, replaces Joseph Tamayo. Alvarez notes his requirements for the position, including fluency in the language of the indigenous tribes and experience treating the sick. An interesting look at the daily affairs and concerns inherent in 17th century colonial administration by one of Europe's greatest colonial powers. Small holes on left margin and a light stain on upper right edge, none affecting signature.
