Description:

(1892 - 1973) American novelist whose works concentrated on Far Eastern themes, author of "The Good Earth" for which she received a Pulitzer Prize in 1938, and the first American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Fine content T.L.S., 1p. 4to., Perkasie, Pennsylvania, Feb. 19, 1941, to a Miss Thompson, in part: "...I am writing this letter to you because you are a woman and I have a woman's book which I should like to get, somehow or other, into the hands of American women. It is My Narrow Isle by Mrs. Sumie Seo Mishima. Here is the story of a modern, courageous, fair-minded woman in Japan, achieving individuality and independence in feudal conditions... I am afraid that many women may not see this book... because it is a woman's book and men booksellers will perhaps overlook its peculiar interest and value; and... because the writer is a Japanese, and the average person who is anti-Japanese may simply turn away his head... Mrs. Mishima writes as a universal woman and her story is in a sense the story of all women..." She signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds and slight wear to the edges, else very good. Sold with a block of four U.S. postage stamps commemorating Buck.
