Description:

(PEARL HARBOR)
WILBUR GLENN JONES U.S. Naval commander of the USS SHAW during World War II, of which he took command on Jan. 1, 1941. On the morning of Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941, the SHAW was in the boat yard in Honolulu for repairs, with only a few men on hand. Jones himself was ashore when the explosions began, but his crew took it on themselves to fire back. During the second wave of explosions, the SHAW was hit three times, and the forward magazines eventually blew up, igniting the vessel. Twenty-five SHAW crew were lost. Jones decided that the ship could nevertheless be saved, so temporary repairs were made and she set off again. She was fully restored in June 1942, and served throughout the war, earning 11 battle stars. Very rare signature on the left edge of a postal cover dispatched from the SHAW, in full: ‘W. Glenn Jones Ft Comdr USN Dec. 7, 1941', also cancelled that day. Postal stamps are detached, light offsetting to middle, otherwise very good.
