Description:

(PEARL HARBOR) 1940 21ST INFANTRY UNIT HISTORY
Rare bound unit history of the 21st U.S. Infantry, 'The Story of a Regiment' by Capt. Judson I. Smith (Honolulu: Advertiser Publishing Co.), 1940. 148pp. 4to., an illustrated history of the regiment right up to the eve of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7,1941. Covers are worn with a few chips, bumped at the corners, contents are very good. When it was reactivated, the mission of the division was to defend the island of Oahu, especially the naval base at Pearl Harbor. It had the distinction of being the first U.S. Army division to see combat in World War II when Japanese aircraft, after bombing and strafing Wheeler Army Air Field, strafed Schofield Barracks causing minor casualties in both the 21st and 25th Divisions. Soldiers answered the attack with small arms fire, downing one, possibly two, Japanese aircraft. After the attack the two divisions executed well rehearsed operational plans designed to repel an amphibious assault on Oahu.
