PAVEL ZHIGAREV AND NIKOLAI BULGANIN
PAVEL ZHIGAREV (1900 – 1963) Commander-in-chief of the Soviet Air Forces twice (1941–42, 1949–57), and also served as the Chief Marshal of Aviation from 1955–59. Zhigarev was the commander of the Air Force during the entirety of Operation Barbarossa. Upon the outbreak of war, the Soviets possessed 7,850 aircraft in the western Soviet Union, in addition to the 1,500 aircraft of the Soviet Navy. Since the Soviets had been caught by surprise, 3,000 aircraft were destroyed on the first day alone. rare D.S., 2pp. 4to., 1946, to then Deputy Minister of the Armed Forces of the USSR NIKOLAI BULGANIN (1895-1975) discussing the financing of aerodromes. Zhigarev signs at conclusion, while Bulganin pens an endorsement on the first page: 'Comrade Khrulyov A.V. For [your] consideration. Bulganin'. Very good.
