Paul McCartney 1963 Signed Letter
An early McCartney letter of particular historical interest, written just as The Beatles had their first #1 single and album in the UK! The typed letter, written to Miss Irene Cooley of Liverpool, reads in full: "Dear Irene, Thanks for writing, it's great to hear from you. I'm glad you enjoyed the show, but I bet you didn't enjoy it as much as we did doing it!! I'll pass the message on to George about the egg and chips!!! Incidentally, if you're interested, the fan club address is: N.E.M.S. Ltd. 12-14 Whitechapel, Liverpool 18. Thanks for writing and compliments and things, Bye for now, love Paul McCartney." McCartney has very nicely signed the letter in black ballpoint pen. It is interesting to note that the typed return address of the fan club on the envelope is Paul McCartney's home address at 20 Forthlin Road in Liverpool. While the letter is not dated, the Liverpool postmark on the envelope indicates the mailing date of May 2, 1963; incidentally, the same week "From Me To You" became the group's first of eleven straight #1 singles in the UK. With the "Please Please Me" album reaching the top spot on the LP chart the very next week, the seeds of British Beatlemania were planted. Chances are McCartney typed this letter just prior to his well-deserved 12-day holiday with Paul and Ringo in Santa Cruz which commenced on April 28. It was then handed over to their Liverpool-based fan club for mailing. McCartney's letter most likely found its way into Miss Cooly's mailbox while Paul was still on vacation. It is more than likely the performance mentioned in the letter is either The Beatles next to last-ever appearance at The Cavern on April 12, or the April 10 appearance at the nearby Majestic Ballroom in Birkenhead. The 6" x 7" letter exhibits mailing folds and tape marks in the corners, but is in otherwise in very good condition. LOA from Beatles autograph expert Frank Caiazzo.
