Description:

PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR(1872 - 1906) Black-American poet and the son of escaped slaves, his Lyrics of Lowly Life was supported by Howells and established his reputation. Fine, rare A.Q.S. penned on a small card, four lines from his feted poem "A Banjo Song", which was part of his acclaimed work Lyrics of a Lowly Life, the collection that established his reputation. In full: "Now I think Heav'n be mo' homelike, If we'd hyeah some music fall, F'om a real ol' fashioned banjo, Like my banjo on de wall! Sincerely yours, Paul Laurence Dunbar". Interestingly, this quote differs in spelling and grammar from the published version of the poem, which reads: "Now I think heaben 'd be mo' homelike Ef we'd hyeah some music fall F'om a real ol'-fashioned banjo Like dat one upon de wall!". An exceptional example, near fine.
