PAUL HAMILTON
(1762 - 1816) U.S. Secretary of the Navy under President James Madison, credited with the military preparedness of naval forces during the War of 1812, most notably sea fortifications. Good content and association A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Washington D.C., February 25, 1812, to American poet and diplomat Joel Barlow (1754-1812) best known for his epic poem 'The Columbiad.' In part: '...Your letter delivered by Lt. Morris affords me pleasure...your kind recollections. I am much gratified also at your aprobation of the conduct of the Commander of the Constitution and the other officers and shall not fail to make them acquainted with your favorable opinion of them...As you will hear fully from the Department of State...I will not add more than...my own writing in best wished for the health...of you...' Small wax seal paper loss on the verso replaced with period paper with slight adhesive residue. Barlow was appointed Minister to France in 1811 with the purpose of easing tensions brought on by the Napoleonic Wars, and the USS Constitution was the ship that sailed him across the Atlantic. He would die later that year from pneumonia.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
