Description:

British Pattern 1907 sword bayonet, 17" blade, 21 ¾" overall, for use with the Short, Magazine, Lee-Enfield (SMLE) rifle used universally by British troops during World War I, and in large numbers during World War II. The wood rips are secured by two flathead screws with spanner bolts, with a slot for the bayonet mount in the pommel and a ring for the lug beneath the SMLE's muzzle. The ricasso is marked with the British War Department's "broad arrow" property stamp over several other indistinct proof marks. the reverse ricasso is marked with a crown over the initials "G B" (for "Great Britain"), over the date "1907" and the maker's name "Wilkinson". The thick blade bears a deep fuller on both sides, running to within 3 ½" of the tip. The grips show appreciable wear with some chips, with the pommel and crossguard showing some oxidation, dings and minor pitting. The blade shows some dark patination, scratches, slight sharpening and minor rounding to the tip, else very good. The bayonet is housed in a black leather scabbard with black painted drag and throat, with the former featuring a round frog stud. The drag has lost the majority of its paint and shows surface oxidation, and the leather shows moderate wear but remains supple, very good overall. The bayonet and scabbard are secured within a white leather "Frog, Buff, Bayonet, General Service", stamped "S G" over "56" on the verso, and suspended from an approx. 36" long white leather belt with plain rectangular brass buckle. This belt bears several names inscribed in ink on the revers: "M. J. McL" (twice), "N L Adshead", and "Charles Brothers". The rivets of the frog show notable verdigris, the belt shows some cracking, and both show some soiling, else very good.
