Description:

Unusual double-sided silk fraternal ribbon, approx. 2 1/2" x 7 1/2", the obverse consisting of a red, white and blue tricolor with the gilt inscription: "Washington Camp, No. 17 P[atriotic] O[rder] S[ons] of A[merica] Leipsic, Del." Sewn to the top edge of this is a second ribbon depicting two high-relief crossed flags, with a celluloid image of Washington praying in a snowy wood suspended from said ribbon. The reverse is a second black silk badge, with the P.O.S. of A. insignia printed in silver, with the legend "In Memoriam Washington camp, No. 17 P.O.S. of A. Leipsic, Del." A 2" braided bullion thread is affixed to the bottom edge. The entire ribbon assembly is suspended from an oblong celluloid badge depicting a bust of Washington flanked by flags, with a spun pin clasp on the reverse and a second clasp allowing the wearer to display either side of the ribbon when worn. A paper label identifying the manufacturer as "The Whitehead & Hoag Co." of Newark, New Jersey is affixed between the two ribbons; the manufacturer's name also appears on the reverse of the claps and on both celluloid images. Very good to fine. Also present are the original Whitehead & Hoag-branded storage envelope and a cardboard backing for the ribbon, both showing some soiling and folds, else very good.
