Description:

PATRICK HENRY
(1736 - 1799) American Revolutionary leader, with Jefferson and Lee initiated the Committee of Correspondence, member of the Continental Congress, remembered for his famous quote "Give me liberty, or give me death!" Rare war-date manuscript D.S. apparently cut from a ledger but complete in itself, 1p. 16mo., June 3, 1777, in full: "Received One hundred and Ten Pounds being the Ballance of my Salary due the 2st March last for the third Quarterly Payment P. Henry". Text is light but legible, some glue show-through from verso with a corner chip reattached; overall just good. On the verso appears a receipt from the same date for one pound, 18 shillings: "...for the use of Paul Washington for Boarding three Prisoners of War...". Signed by one William Cowper. During the war, Henry served as the first post-colonial Governor of Virginia, from 1776-79, an office he held again from 1784-86.
