PATRICK F. GARRETT
Very lengthy 12-line autograph endorsement signed "Pat F. Garrett Sheriff" as Sheriff of Lincoln County, Mar. 23, 1881, at the height of the Lincoln County War. On the recto of the document Garrett is ordered by the Court Clerk to arrest one "Robinson", whose first name is unknown, for having violated "Sunday Laws". On the verso Garrett writes: "I hereby certify that I served the within writ by arresting the body of the within named ---- Robinson and delivering said body to the court. Pat. F. Garrett Sheriff Fee for service $1.00 commitment 1.00 return .50 [total] $2.50. Fine condition. Garrett is rare in any form; his autograph as Lincoln County Sheriff is exceedingly rare! Very good condition. "Sunday laws" are the same as "blue laws", a type of law designed to enforce religious standards, particularly the observance of a day of worship or rest.
