PASSPORT OF RICHARD RANDOLPH, WORLD TRAVELLER
Collection of several documents, including passport and travel related items, 1834 to 1837, contained in a red leather holder with the embossed name of the owner to whom all the documents were issued, one "Richard Randolph". Randolph's passport, issued in 1834, is signed by Secretary of State LOUIS MCLANE (1786-1857). The documents are in several different languages, including Arabic, with more than 40 entry stamps throughout. There is a pencil translation for one of the documents included, in small part: "To the Authorities. Be it known that the American charge des affairs resident in Constantinople one of eyes approved of…has presented sealed Takria of American Nobleman Richard Zandof…from Constantinople for the purpose of traveling by land and by water to Smyrna…and to...Cairo, and to Tripoli of Syria and to Jerusalem the Holy City…By the Grand Sultan of Turkey at Constantinople..." The Sultan of the Ottoman Empire at this time was Mahmud II (1789-1830). Other pencil notes read: "…[to] the United States Consular Agents at Said…Jaffa, Jerusalem…" Another document is on the letterhead of Fernando II (1810-59), King the Two Sicilies (1830-59), and is signed by two officials from a prefect of police. There are dozens of visas stamped within the travel book showing that Randolph had taveled throughout the Middle East, Europe, and Russia, and each visa bear a unique stamp. An absolutely incredible assemblage of period travel documents!

Shipments are sent USPS Priority, USPS International Priority, DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option, signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight.
