Description:

762. ROBERT TREAT PAINE (1731-1841) American jurist, member of the Continental Congress, signer of the Declaration of Independence and first Attorney General of Massachusetts. A.D.S. "Robert Treat Paine" in the text, 1p. oblong 12vo., Taunton, July 12, 1766, a promissory note in the amount of "three pounds seventeen shillings & eight pence" to Paine. Rarely do we see Paine's full name, which was placed in this document for the legal purpose of identifying him beyond any doubt as the person to whom the money was owed. Very good. $300-400
