Description:

PACIFIC ANTI-AIRCRAFT ARTILLERYMAN RELIC AND PHOTO GROUPING
A great grouping of items once owned and used by anti-aircraft artilleryman Francis E. O'Connell of the 389th AAA AW Battalion. O'Connell served on New Guinea and in the recapture of the Philippines. Included in the grouping is O'Connell's non-regulation fighting knife, an antique steel-bladed knife with antler handle, 11" long overall, with three early rivets through the grips and tang, ca. 1860s, with a later hand-made leather sheath embossed "El Lobo" with an image of a wolf and the last digits of his serial number on the reverse. A green piece of reinforcing metal punctured to form the soldier's initials is attached at front. Also present is a photo showing O'Connell standing before a P-51 with this knife clearly visible. Also present is a photo album containing copies of O'Connell's discharge, occupation currency, about 46 photos of the soldier and members of his battalion in the field, and about 20 commercial photos of islanders, MacArthur, etc.; O'Connell's theater-made ID bracelet, dog tags, pistol lanyard, money belt, shoulder patch (new), ribbon bar, and six campaign and other medals. Very good.
