OTTO WEDDIGEN
(1882-1915) German U-boat commander of World War I. Weddigen was awarded the Pour le Merite and the Iron Cross First and Second Class. Most noted for his command of one of the first German submarines, U-9, and his significant role during the action of Sep. 22, 1914 when, in less than an hour, he sank the three British armored cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy with the loss of almost 1500 men. Weddigen died when his U-29 was rammed by the British battleship HMS Dreadnought on March 19, 1915. An extremely rare partly-printed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., Cuxhaven, Sep. 12, 1912, a 'holiday pass' issued to a man in his command allowing a two-day furlough in Darmstadt. Fine condition. WITH: six related period postcards. Fine condition.
