Description:

(1882-1915) German U-boat commander of World War I. Weddigen was awarded the Pour le Mérite and the Iron Cross First and Second Class. Most noted for his command of one of the first German submarines, U-9, and his significant role during the action ofSep. 22, 1914 when, in less than an hour, he sank the three British armored cruisers HMS Aboukir, HMS Hogue and HMS Cressy with the loss of almost 1500 men. Weddigen died when his U-29 was rammed by the British battleship HMS Dreadnought on March 19, 1915. An extremely rare fountain pen ink signature ('Weddigen'), with rank beneath and “U-9 send greetings!” in German above, making reference to the U-9 submarine, on a German Feldpostkarte. Autographs of Weddigen are extremely rare in any form as a result of his early death. Together with Carl de Vogt (1885-1970) German Actor who starred in several of Fritz Lang's early films. Vintage signed sepia postcard photograph of De Vogt in a half length pose in uniform in costume as Otto Weddigen in a scene from the film U-9. Signed in bold, dark fountain pen ink with his name alone to a clear area at the base of the image. With a brief holograph note to the verso, in German, signed with his initials. Very good to fine.
