Description:

OTTO WACHTER
(1901 - 1949) SS-Gruppenfuhrer and the Governor of the District of Krakow in occupied Poland, and in 1944, he was appointed as head of the German Military Administration in the puppet state of the Republic of Salo in Italy. In 1940, 68,000 Jews were expelled from Krakow, and in 1941, the Krakow Ghetto was created for the remaining 15,000 Jews by his decrees. Most of these Jews died as a result of Operation Reinhard. Wachter also organized the Waffen-SS Galizien, later the First Division of the Ukrainian National Army. In 1949, Wachter was given refuge by pro-Nazi Austrian bishop Alois Hudal in the Vatican where he died the same year. Very rare T.L.S. on Reischsstathalter der Staatskommissar letterhead, 1p. 4to., Vienna, Apr. 5, 1938 to JOSEF BURCKEL (1895-1944), Gauleiter of the Saar Palatinate and Vienna who promoted anti-Jewish decrees and seized Jewish property, also deporting nearly 50,000 Jews to their deaths. In part: '...I refer to your statement regarding the party comrades who have entered here from Germany and ask you to issue residency permits to the employees of my office listed in the attachment...the party comrades mentioned have special specialist knowledge from the NSDAP refugee agency, which I consider to be indispensable for establishing and managing my office...' Folds, file holes at left margin, else very good. Only three weeks earlier, Wachter had come to Vienna as state commissar in the 'Liquidation Ministry', heading the 'Wachter-Kommission'. It was responsible for the dismissal and/or compulsory retirement of all Austrian officials who did not conform with the Nazi regime. A rare and highly desirable signature, especially given the continuing interest and publicity relating to his son's ironically-titled book: 'My Father, the Good Nazi'.
