Description:

OTTO SKORZENY
(1908 - 1975) Nazi officer and Hitler's chief and favorite commando, he made a daring mountain-top rescue of Mussolini, placed english-speaking soldier in American uniforms to mislead American forces in the Bulge, and after the war headed the organization that helped hundreds of ex-SS officers flee Germany. Very rare A.N.S. penned while a prisoner of the Americans and waiting to offer testimony at Nuremberg, 1p. 8vo., Sep. 9, 1945, in full: "I confirm this is my signature made by my own hand. Otto Skorzeny Obersturmbannfuhrer Res.". A collector typed an identification well beneath Skorzeny's signature, interestingly noting that Skorzeny "kidnapped" Mussolini. Sold with an original photograph of Skorzeny, 2" x 3", undoubtedly taken of Skorzeny while an American prisoner. Skorzeny was held as a prisoner of war for more than two years before being tried as a war criminal himself at the Dachau Trials in 1947 for allegedly violating the laws of war during the Battle of the Bulge. He was brought before a US military tribunal in Dachau on August 18, 1947 but escaped on July 27, 1948 while awaiting his verdict.
