Description:

OTTO SKORZENY
(1908 - 1975) Nazi officer and Hitler's chief and favorite commando, he made a daring mountain-top rescue of Mussolini, placed English-speaking soldiers in American uniforms to mislead American forces in the Bulge, and after the war headed an organization that helped hundreds of ex-SS officers flee Germany. Good content D.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Madrid, Oct. 1, 1969 to publisher Roger Bender, known for his quality military reference books, biographies, etc. Skorzeny submits an introduction for a Waffen-SS reference book to be published by Bender. In part: '...I am really enjoying the invitation from the authors to write an introduction for this book...I must say that I appreciate not only in the name of the still living members of the Waffen-SS, but also of our dead brothers, the tremendous research work which the authors put into this book. I appreciate this work so more as it is done by two British historians showing such an interest in our old military units, universally known as the Waffen-SS. I am sure that this book will be a very unic [sic, unique] one and gives with all possible precision to all people who are interested in this field, a complete description about all uniforms and insignia used in the Waffen-SS...I am sure that the two authors will write later on about the history of the Waffen-SS and about the main battles of the second world war in which Waffen-SS Divisions or Corps took part. These books, once published, will form an important part of the true history the second world war, and they will show that the Waffen-SS formed for the first time an European army, composed only of volunteers, united by an European ideal which was possibly only premature at this time...'. Mailing folds and wrinkles at bottom, very good. Sold with an Oct. 6, 1970 contract concerning royalties, etc. initialed by Skorzeny, and a page of a typed 'Agreement of Publication', unsigned.
