Description:

OTTO I OF BAVARIA
(1848-1916) King of Bavaria from 1886-1913, although he never actively ruled because of alleged mental illness. Good content A.L.S. in French, 3pp. 8vo., Munich, August 19, 1870, to Count Boleslas Pototski regarding his health and military service. In part: '...I have been so ill with the fever that has attacked me several times with great strength and...has terribly weakened me, but in the last few months, when happily I have had a remission, I have been travelling most incessantly...This morning the King has at last given me permission to join the army to take part in the campaign against France...which has already demanded many sacrifices!...As far as I can tell I am going to the Chalons area, I very much hope I can take part in a melee, perhaps I could be there when they capture Metz!...' Slightly toned with scattered stains, a tear on the third page has been repaired with tape. Otto served in both the Austria-Prussian War of 1866, and the Franco Prussian War of 1870-71. His experiences on the battlefield, especially of the latter conflict, traumatized him and caused him to suffer from depression and insomnia. His mental illnesses grew worse over time and were used to declare him unfit for rule by ambitious Prussian relatives such as Luitpold I and II who would later serve as his regents. It is believed that while Otto suffered from mental issues, the doctors administering care to him did less than they could have, likely for political considerations.
