Description:

Rare war-date publication, "Oswiecim: Camp of Death" (New York: Poland Fights), 1944, 48pp. 8vo., the American publication of a report originally produced by the Polish Underground State, presenting a narrative of the hardships and cruelties faced by prisoners at the concentration camp in Oswiecim, Poland, better remembered as Auschwitz. The narrative describes the deportation of Jews from Polish ghettos, their transport to and arrival at the camp (including the infamous sign over the entrance, "Arbeit Macht Frei"), beatings and torture of prisoners, poor living conditions, the execution of escapees, executions by gas and the disposal of bodies by cremation. An "annex" at the conclusion presents a map and list of the known concentration camps in Poland, organized by function. Prior to the defeat of Germany and the liberation of the camps in 1945, narratives such as this would have been among the only means by which their existence and the conditions under which their prisoners of suffered could be related to the American public. Shows minor toning to the covers, else very good.
