Description:

OSWALD POHL
(1892 - 1951) Head of the Economic Office of the SS and ultimate overseer of the concentration camp system. It was Pohl who turned his victims' dental gold, eyeglasses, hair, etc. into cash for the SS, using the infamous "Max Heiliger" Swiss accounts. Captured and executed in 1951. Superb association of the names of two of Nazi Germany's two most infamous murderers, Pohl and JURGEN STROOP (1895-1952) SS and Police Leader of the Poland-Warsaw area. It was Stroop who, during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising of 1943, ordered its suppression costing the lives of tens of thousands. As his forces were forced back by heavy resistance, he ordered the entire Ghetto burned down, building by building, and the killing or deportation to extermination camps all of its inhabitants. Pohl mentions Stroop in his letter, 1p. large 4to. stamped "Reichsfuhrer SS" at top, Berlin, Mar. 7, 1939 in which he writes both Stroop and a personnel officer in Karlsbad. It appears that 28.SS-Standarte Treasurer Johannes Hegel had been apprehended embezzling RM 67 from the regiment's funds. Stroop had ordered that the man be expelled for a period of one month, but apparently he had continued working on the staff. Pohl then asks that more severe measure be taken. File holes and dampstains at left margin, some very small chips at bottom affecting nothing. Both Pohl and Stroop met a fitting demise at the end of a hangman's rope.
